Light Speed Individual Open Buzzer Quiz: Frequently Asked Questions

If you have any questions you would like answering on these pages, ask them frequently. Email

“We might get a better turn out if we try the first Sunday of the month rather than the last”.

Agreed. Equally we might not so I will open it up for discussion to see if it would make a definite difference. If I do change I would like it to be permanent.

“The £10 a head is, I'm sure, putting potential good quizzers off, and maybe we should try reducing it to £5”.

Perhaps. I based the £10 figure as it is a nice round number, big enough to put off passing strangers whilst being within the reach of any of us who have bought twenty goes on a quiz machine. (n.b. the most I have ever won on a quiz machine is £46 and that was 300 years ago). Mark Kerr also suggested letting people play for nothing, so I may combine the ideas, but only if I can be given proof that it is what people want – So email me if you’d like a reduction or you know somebody who would definitely play if it were cheaper. After all the intent is that all the money bounces back to the players evenly in the long run. Handicaps will still be given so anybody with pretensions to winning should pay.

“Why don’t we handicap?”

We do. Damned if you do and damned if you don’t with handicaps, I personally think the system might be too gentle on the winners, nevertheless we get some very close games so perhaps it needs a few more events before it settles down. See Handicaps

“Why don’t we run the event as a series?"

Good Idea. There will be at least one event per month this year, All competitors in an event will receive one point, with an additional point for the amount of places they finish up the event (e.g. if 15 people compete an event will be worth 15 to the first place, 14 to the second etc. The 2004 champion will be the person who has participated in at least three events and has scored the most championship points in three events. I am considering making this retrospective seeing that Kevin Ashman only participated in two last year! See Calendar .

"Surely if Steve Kidd organizes the quiz he should not be participating?"

That’s right, I have memorized the 100,000 questions in the books we use and the page and order numbers. I was only kidding when I got whitewashed in loads of games earlier this season and I really am the best quizzer in England (That is, of course, all patent bollocks). See Sources

"Which king...?"

Charles II
