Light Speed Individual Open Buzzer Quiz: News 09: 29th September 2003

Karl getting his just desserts with Pat (runner up) Series 4: Rainhill 28th September. Match Report

Karl Whelan Came, Saw, Conquered

Phew! What a scorcher

Check the results page for all the figures, but needless to say it was another afternoon of top class quizzing, throwing up remarkable games and statistics.

There were 25 games and well over 500 questions. Despite losing his first game to Mark Kerr, Karl Wheelan, ex Century Quiz setter and the Scourge of the West went on to scalp allcomers, most notably the so-far undefeated (in singles) Pat Gibson twice. A whole rake of games had only one or two questions between the competitors, Darren Martin suffering his only pool defeat on the last question (against Alan Gibbs) and was the highest scorer in the pool games. Graham Barker consistently scored brilliantly (only one less then Mark Kerr) yet was unlucky to win only one game. Alan Gibbs was awesome, the only person to win their first four matches, but was run close by Steve Kidd, the current Yorkshire Champion, desperately clutching straws to put a positive slant on the Merseyside dominance of the event! Doh!

Thanks especially to Mark and Darren for quite excellent bespoke questions

Darren Martin won the Fawlty Towers special by a country mile, taking on Alan and Karl, but not allowing them a look in. Kudos to me for pitching the content just right, with a 76.5% conversion rate of questions answered. Next time it is the Simpsons, set by Darren (see 8 For details on speciality rounds).
