Light Speed Individual Open Buzzer Quiz: News 16: 30th November 2003
THE MORE YOU PLAY THE LUCKIER YOU GET
For the second time in five weeks we were back in Oxford, following Rob Linham's FAB Trash tournament (Oxfordian concepts of 'Trash' differ markedly from the Pomfretian). A huge fillip was added to Sunday's proceedings with the inclusion of the mighty Millhouse Warriors triumvirate of Tim Westcott, England international Mark Bythway and Eric Kilby, along with a guest appearence from my hero Rob Linham (before riding into the sunset) and rookie appearances for Steve Stenson and Toby Cox. The usual suspects (Warburton, Kidd, Eddiss, Will Jones and Pearson) ensured that no prisoners were taken in four games where some of the most thrilling buzzing saw the record for the simultaneous buzz being reduced to 15 hundredths of a second and some notable performances and many memorable questions and answers, e.g.
Q. Jeuneau..
Peter Eddiss: "Do I know what?"
Tim Wescott: "Alaska" (Which was of course correct)
Q. Callisto..
Will Jones: "Jupiter" (failing to break Steve Kidd's "Io" shortest question correct response record, but actually beating Steve to the buzzer with the fortnightly Jovian moon question)
Q. On its return to television who, in 2001 became BBC's mastermind champion o..(n the discovery channel)?
Mark Bythway (confusedly): Michael Penrice (which was correct, but remarkable in that Eric Kilby, who was the runner up in that series was also runner up to the buzzer!).
The venue, Antiquity Hall, was FANTASTIC, with coffee and tea at 20p a cup and four meals for £12. If I ever do it in Oxford again I hope it can be under Hannah's hospitable roof.
As the Swindon Mafia had to shoot off at noon, we played four games and a final (prior to Steve Pearson's victory in the 1978 number ones quiz). It seemed far more open than usual, with two victories for Pearson and one for Kidd. The final line up wasn't bad. It contained, in fact, some of the best quizzers in England. Stenson, Bythway, Westcott, Toby, Eddiss, Jones. Pearson and Kidd. I won. (No, that's not a typo).
I don't do this very often:
I hate overly formatted web pages but
yes! yes! yes! yes! yes!
