Light Speed Individual Open Buzzer Quiz: News 23: 29th February 2004

Pat recieves the Hamlyn Pictorial History, £50 and his rightfull crown backPat Gibson unbeaten to take first event of 2004

For the third time we were upstairs at the Victoria, welcoming two absoliutely fantastic new players and grinding out some of the most prolonged matches. Jim Prendagast, doyen of the Mersyside quiz league and film Guru got off to a gentle start before racking up not only unique answers but some extremely sharp pressing. Dave Edwards made the journey up from Stoke to show those qualities of patience, consistency and eclectic knowledge which gave him his Mastermind championship coupled uniquely with his jackpot win on who wants to be a Millionaire.

Pat set the tone in game one with a fairly easy win within 40 answers. The next game was a different kettle of fish, with 120 answers and Pat coming back to pip Kidd and Prendergast at the post (Kidd spraying 12 answers after reaching 25 and trying to cross the line, damn!). A simialar result in game three seemed to put the wind in Pat's sails, and after a stint asking his own set of questions and scoring 14 on his specialist Mastermind subject was rarely troubled in his last two games.

The quality of quizzing was discouragingly awesome yet each player showed flashes of luck, inspiration and pure speed to nail hard to come by answers. From a personal perspective this game was the toughest, as the slightest mistakes were punished swiftly by the other voracious contestants.

It is to be seen to be believed. Results

Rule and format changes.

Handicaps

Henceforth will be calculated as before, but for game play will be rounded to the nearest whole number

Rankings

A ranking system has now been added whereby player one gets ten ranking points, player two nine and so on down to anybody on tenth or worse gets one ranking point for the 2004 season. For the end of season Rankings, rank will be awarded by considering sequentially

  1. Best three ranking finishes only, but in the case of a tie
  2. adding the next best ranking finish and continuing this process untill all finishes have been considered. If still tied than
  3. Number of question points scored will be added and the highest will win
  4. Look - It is not going to be a tie after this, but if it is it will be a draw.

2004 Rankings after Game 1
Name Points
Pat Gibson 10
Steve Kidd 9
David Edwards 8
Jim Prendergast 7
Alan Gibbs 6
Lee Warburton 5

Game length

Games must be shorter if we are going to accomodate more players, therefore therefore games will be trialed at first too 15. It is hoped that the shortening of the games will have the effect of making the handicaps bite a little harder, and making resuts slightly more random (without, of course, retaing the element of skill so critical to success)

Venues

efforts will be made to secure venues with some intrinsic quality for visitors, e.g., museums, parks, sites of special interest etc. Any suggestions are most welcome
