Light Speed Individual Open Buzzer Quiz: News 25: 28th March 2004
Steve Kidd scrambles remarkable recovery
The Conservative club at Todmorden was the most difficult venue to get to, but the one with the gretest welcome so far. Dave Tilley, crossword compiler, TV regular and League quiz champion organised the location, and his fantastic sister not only put on the most bodacious food, but acted as quizmaster for the last two games.
After four games out of six it was a two horse race, with Darren Martin having two wins, a second place, a total of 11 points and a game in hand over Pat Gibson, who, having played all four had the other two wins and a total of 11.5 points. Pat had to drop out from game five, which Steve Kidd won in a very tight finish and saw Darren only just edged out into third place by Dave Tilley. The last game was for all five contestants, but Pat Gibson had pressing business which regretfully required his prescence elsewhere. No matter as only the most improbable turnover in form could prevent Darren winning, yet, such are the vagaries of life, that that unique circumstance prevailed. Playing first to twenty points, Steve had to win with Dave and Lee sharing the places. Even with the score poised at Lee 19, Steve 13, Darren 5 and Dave 0 it looked all over, yet both Dave and Steve went on storming runs, Lee couldn't get in first and the coup de grace fell on the question "Des Moines..". Only only three tenths of a second separated the contestants, but the quickest buzz fell to the fortunate Steve and "Iowa".
I sometimes feel ('cos I am that Steve Kidd, if you didn't know) that I am like on a something like The Truman Show, and the result has been fixed for some purpose unbeknownst to me. If this sounds like drug crazed surrealist paranoia to you, well, that's what it seems like to me. Totally wierd and most thought provoking.
